Encouraging Active Learning Through Student Presentations on Natural Phenomena
-Vaishnavi
Problem Statement
While I attempted to make my science session creative and more than understanding facts and information and often did experiments with them I wanted them to explore this methodology themselves. I also found students also feel hesitant to speak in front of others and wanted to give them an opportunity to overcome this.
Activity Implementation
To address this, I introduced a classroom activity where students prepared individual presentations on natural phenomena. Each student was given a different topic and asked to research it – create a working model, and prepare a chart explaining the concept.

Students explored their topics using books, discussions, and computers. They browsed the internet, watched videos, and took notes to understand the concept better and used simple materials to make models and charts for their presentation.
On presentation day, students explained their topics to the class using their models and charts. They also answered questions from classmates, which helped them practice speaking confidently.

Outcome
This activity helped students understand scientific concepts better while developing public speaking, creativity, critical thinking, and independent learning skills. The working models helped connect theory with practical demonstration.
By the end of the activity, students became more engaged in learning and gained confidence in explaining concepts. The presentations also created a collaborative learning environment where students learned from each other.
Reflections:
My name is Vaishnavi.K, I stand for Kindness and Respect for myself and for others. During the students’ presentations, I felt very happy seeing them speak confidently. I really enjoyed observing their hard work, preparation, and involvement in the activity. It was wonderful to see the effort they put into understanding the topic and presenting it in their own way.
My name is Thenmozhi, I stand for truth and love for myself and for others. I observed that students were very interested and engaged while presenting their topics. They tried to explain their ideas clearly and confidently to their classmates. This activity helped them understand the concepts better and improved their confidence in speaking and sharing their ideas. It was a meaningful learning experience for both the students and the teacher.
Students Reflection:
We felt the experience was very good and enjoyable. We liked preparing at home, doing experiments, and making presentations to teach others something they did not know. At first, we had some stage fear while presenting, but slowly we became more confident. We learned new words and understood the concepts better. For example, earlier we thought an earthquake was just buildings shaking, but now we know it happens because of the movement of tectonic plates. Teaching others made us feel happy, and we enjoyed learning together. We would like to do more presentations like this in the future.
