Priyan the Tailoring Bird:

The 4th grade were studying a lesson called “A busy Month” a letter written by Gijubhai. In that he would talk about many Indian birds. In the class we discussed about the birds which they have seen. While in the discussion we were discussing about nest and how they are made. Each bird makes its nest differently. So, to do a hands on activity, I asked them to go out of the class like a bird and find any material with which they can build a nest. Everyone were excited and they ran out in search of the materials for their nest. They collected some twigs, hay, leaves. Priyan was able to make a tailoring birds nest out of the leaves, hay and thread he found outside. He was making the nest even in the break time. While he was doing the nest Nithish from 3rd grade came and helped him.

After,Priyan sharing his nest model in the assembly Harish,Aasish and Elanchezhiyan made a nest model of a weaver bird.

The Microscopic Inventor:

As the children were preparing their project for Sir.C.V.Raman contest. Kabilan from 9th grade can to me and asked to me if there were any laser lights he could use. I showed him were the lights were. I asked him “what are you going to do with it?”. He replied “I am going to build a microscope with it”. I was curious about how he is going to build and microscope with it. I thought it is going to be complicated to do it. So , I decided to help him with Bala,Hemasundar(9th grade). He just took the lens which he got from the laser light and placed it on top of the camera on the cellphone and thats all! The microscope is done. To test, first we placed a leaf on the lens and saw the microscopic image on the phone. Next we saw a spider skeleton,flower.. I was inspired on how we can build a microscope using a lens from the laser. We had a lot of fun.

Grit

~Saranya & Ranjith

Angela Lee Duckworth argues that the key to success is grit—a characteristic she defines as “passion and perseverance for very long-term goals.”

There are lots of brilliant people, but it’s the ones who stay true to themselves and follow through that make it. The key to success is setting a goal and pacing yourself (for a marathon rather than a sprint). It’s staying true to that goal even when life gets messy and even when it’s inconvenient that makes the difference.

These uncomfortable, challenging situations are the ones that force us to grow the most. Grit is used to find out our weakness and it make us to work on it.

One possible way to grow grit in children and ourselves is having a ‘growth mindset’ i.e. understanding ourselves and the brain that our abilities are not fixed in stone and can constantly change if we persevere.

Babaji Vidhyashram School visit to Isai Ambalam and Udavi

—Pratap, Poovizhi

A group of 44 teacher came to visit Isai Ambalam. Sanjeev, Logeshwari, Saranya and Pratap welcomed them. Sanjeev started introducing about the school and what we deeply care about the children.

Then we each explained Some of the EBD that children made. Saranya took them to the pond and explained the history of the pond.Pond

Then I took them to the clay room and explained about the clay room Clay Room. During this time the children were not their at the school. They went to visit Matrimandir and they came back while I was explaining about the clay room. The moment children came inside the school I felt that they got blessing from the Mother since they visited Matrimandir.

Then children took initiative to explain about their EBD projects. They started with the tree house. They explained in English and it really touched me to see how much the children had progressed in the last year to be confident in front of 40 teachers to talk so confidently . They explained the entire process that took to build the tree house. Tree house

Then they took the teachers  to the clay oven that they built during sleepover Clay oven. They also explained about the India map EBD. Yuvasri and Kaviya from 6th standard explained about the India map India Map.

Then they took them to the garden EBD and Sabari and Suresh from 7th standard explained about the garden Garden EBD.

Then Logeshwari explained about the Kitchen waste water EBD. She answered the questions  when the teacher asked to her Kitchen waste water.

Finally all the teacher visited the class room and interacted with the teachers and students.

The UKG students told the months when the teacher were asking to them. The 6th and 7th took them to their class and showed the 5S circle that they do in their class room. They also showed the Mindstorm robot that they built in STEM land.

They also showed that they submitted projects for Raman Award and got a participant certification. Then they sang a song for teacher.

Ayush from 7th standard presented the project in Scratch.

Then Saranya took the teacher to the STEM land and explained what we do in STEM land. She explained the ground rules and the check in check out system that we follow in STEM land.

In Udavi

They came to Udavi after their lunch. We gave a presentation on STEM land in the i-SMART class room. They also attended the stewardship session held by Sanjeev. During the session teachers were able to find what they stand for and also were able to find their fear.

Every teacher was able to process what they really care about and found what they stand for. The teachers were happy and also took the stand and fear chart to put it on their notice board in their school.

Constellation

-Ranjith, sanjeev, saranya, and Logeshwari

In this week sleep over, children wants to see a moon in telescope. we setup the telescope, but we did not see the moon in our telescope. Then two persons came from Puducherry science center & Planetarium and they tried on telescope. They found out there is some parallax error in telescope and all of us get disappointed. One person from planetarium show us group of seven stars { ( hindu astrology: saptarishi mandalam ) , ( astronomy: Big dipper ) } and told us name of stars in that constellation and way to find the north pole using pointer star on Big dipper constellation. After that we all went to terrace to see more constellation and he show us Leo Zodiac constellation, and children ask him to show Libra and Cancer zodiac constellation, but we can’t see that. Then children ask him why there is not star. He explained that, there is stars but we can’t see due to light pollution ( bright moon light ). After that he show us presentation which consist of information about constellations, Galaxy, and life cycle and star ( change in color over it life time ).

Introduction to Analog Layout

saranya

There are many things mater in analog passes for success (I.e noise, bandwidth, amplitude and frequency). I learnt few difference between analog layout and digital layout. Compare to digital layout it occupies less space and looks neat. We started doing step by step orthogonality, fourier series, exponential & expansion as sequence, laplace transform. First we did theoretical part that is Rc (Resistor and Capacitor) circuit with the input of sine wave and unit step function. By using exponential and laplace transform we found the output of unit step and sine wave in RC circuit. Now I have started calculating sheet resistance of each component (poly,metal,contact,etc..) that we will use it in magic tool.

Azim Premji and teachers from Government school

Around 37 government school teachers and a team from Azim Premji unversity visited STEM land. We presented a paper on “STEM land in Isaiambalam school” at Sindhanai Sangamam symposium. Some of them were inspired from our talk and they came to visit STEM land. The teachers saw what the children were working on in Isai Ambalam school. We had a Saturday school and all the children were working on the EBDs. The teachers interacted with us as well as with the children. One of the teachers reflected that we were thinking of each child and addressing his or her need differently and that was something she wanted to do in her classroom.

After that they visited STEM land in Udavi school. Children showed them few projects. The teachers also tried to solve caste puzzles. We also conducted a Stewardship session for the them lead by Sanjeev.

Linear Equation with story

saranya

We have started with the story of linear equation. Linear equation is nothing but a straight line and choice. For an example we have taken x+y=10. The story of the linear equation is, I and my brother likes chocolates if I get more chocolate obviously he is going to get less chocolate that is the story of the linear equation. After that we have entered into the problem. We started drawing the line for that equation.First I have drawn wrongly for that equation x+y=10. What I have Thought is when the x increases y also get increase equally so the point is (10,10) that is why I have drawn like that.  After that I have understood the function of linear equation. In that linear equation it will get increases by 10 on both the axis.

When I learned how to draw a linear equation. I have made my own question that is x+y=20. Then I have checked my equation using geogebra.

Saturday at Isai Ambalam School

How to make a concrete structure using cement, jelly and sand. Children wanted to make a beam around the pond. To make a beam they wanted to they need a iron rods. We bought the iron rods and the tools to bend the rod into a rectangular structure. First time when I made a TMT Ring it didn’t come in proper way. 5th time I got it correctly. Children were excited and they were watching me seriously. They found the patterns and how to bent the iron rod. One child from 4th standard took effort to draw the actual ring size using a on the surface where I was making the rings. Then Children started to do and they found the pattern how to bend the rings. They told the that they need to bend it 90 degree. All the children used the ring structure that the boy drew which was very useful to bend the ring at the right size.

Different kind of experience with children

Saranya

RYSI (Raman Young Science Innovator) When we got the circular about Raman award. Students were so excited to do many things in different ways.I have supported few of them.It was different experienced with each children. One of the student is from 9th grade, he wants to measure the frequency. We have connected one micro phone with an Oscilloscope. With the help of an Oscilloscope we measured our heart beat frequency.

I learned about Density(formula). In water, if we place a stone in water, it will sink because the density of the stone is greater than 1. If the density of an object is in less than 1 it will float in the water. Sharani from 5th grade she did density project for Raman award. I just supported her. That was nice experienced with her.

In scratch, I learned to give input from the keyboard using sensing(tool). I have drawn a circle using scratch. Inside the program no need to give radius value I have given radius value from the keyboard. That was new for me.
